Heart-Myocardial infarction This cross section of the heart shows left ventricular hypertrophy. Whitish streaks within the ventricular wall indicate infarction of the myocardium. About 99% of infarcts are caused by thrombotic or embolic events. Other causes such as local vasospasm, compression of the vessel or twisting of the vessels can also cause ischemia.
